Stress and Anxiety in Modern-Day Living

Stress and anxiety have become commonplace in our hectic modern-day lives.  And isn’t it any wonder?  We rush around from one place to another as we juggle work and study commitments with parenting responsibilities, household chores, and leisure activities. The cost of living is more expensive, yet our salaries haven’t risen to keep up with it.

On top of that, we worry about our jobs, studies, relationships, and our children. We stress about paying our bills and buying essentials like food and clothes. Will we ever be able to afford to buy our own home? When can we take a much-needed holiday? There’s anxiety about the future. Will there be enough money for our retirement?  And then there’s debt stress, which can be overwhelming.  A comprehensive post by Forbes.com highlights just how much consumer debt is causing stress in people’s lives.

I’ve learned that when it gets all a bit too much, then it’s time to do something about it. There are several things people commonly do. They may take time out by going for a walk, working out at the gym, playing a sport, or going out for a coffee with friends. But if these things don’t resonate with you, they’re not helping, or you’re just not able to go out, then there are other solutions such as Meditation, Self-Hypnosis, or EFT for stress and anxiety management.  Any or all of these techniques combined can help you to feel calm and peaceful and support you in your day-to-day life.

Understanding Stress and Anxiety

It’s normal to experience some degree of stress in our daily lives.  Understanding the causes and effects of stress and anxiety is the first step toward finding effective relief.  But first, it’s important to understand that stress is the body’s natural response to a perceived threat (real or imagined). It triggers the release of stress hormones, which prepares us for what is known as the ‘fight-or-flight response. However, when stress becomes chronic, it can lead to a range of health problems, and impact our physical and mental well-being.

Anxiety, on the other hand, is a prolonged sense of discomfort, apprehension, or fear. It can be triggered by specific situations or arise without a clear cause. Anxiety disorders rank among the most prevalent mental health conditions, impacting millions of people globally. The symptoms of anxiety can surface in both physical and mental aspects, posing challenges in the search for relief.

What are Emotional Freedom Techniques?

Stress and anxiety have become commonplace in our hectic modern-day lives.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) also referred to as ‘tapping’ is a stress-release method that combines a tapping technique while reciting personalized affirmations.

EFT is a gentle and safe method that combines the principles of traditional Chinese acupuncture with modern psychology.  A gentle tapping technique is used to stimulate certain points on the body, instead of using needles.

The theory behind it is, that all thoughts and emotions, whether positive or negative, are forms of energy. This energy has a very real physical impact on all functions of the body. Although the body has natural healing capability, stress, and emotional problems often stand in the way and prevent the healing process.

This is where EFT comes in.  Tapping on the meridian points on the body stimulates certain parts of the brain which helps to reduce cortisol levels, (also known as the stress hormone) thereby allowing the body to restore the natural balance of energy and healing in the body.

You can use EFT Tapping for anxiety, stress, worry, trauma, grief, emotional distress, and associated physical pain, just to name a few problems. It can help you to overcome negative beliefs, emotions, and thought patterns and help you to shift to a positive perspective.  Emotional Freedom Techniques was designed by Gary Craig who is a personal performance coach, based in California.   Watch the video created by EFT founder Gary Craig to learn more about the amazing benefits of Emotional Freedom Techniques.

The Science Behind EFT Tapping

While the mechanisms behind EFT are still being explored, scientific research has shown promising results regarding its effectiveness in stress and anxiety relief. EFT is believed to work by reducing the activation of the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions and triggering the stress response.

Studies have demonstrated that EFT can significantly reduce cortisol levels, the primary stress hormone, leading to a decrease in anxiety symptoms. It has also been shown to lower heart rate, blood pressure, and other physiological markers of stress. Additionally, EFT has been found to improve emotional regulation and increase feelings of calm and relaxation.

The effectiveness of EFT is further supported by anecdotal evidence and personal testimonials from individuals who have experienced profound transformation and relief from stress and anxiety through regular practice. The combination of ancient wisdom and modern science makes EFT a powerful tool for holistic well-being.

The Benefits of EFT for Stress and Anxiety Relief

EFT offers a unique approach to stress and anxiety relief by addressing the underlying emotional causes rather than just treating the symptoms. By tapping on specific acupressure points (meridians) EFT helps to release blockages in the body’s energy system, allowing for the free flow of energy and the release of negative emotions.

One of the key benefits of EFT is its ability to provide immediate relief from acute stress and anxiety. By tapping on the EFT meridian tapping points, you can quickly activate the body’s relaxation response, leading to a reduction in symptoms such as racing thoughts, rapid heartbeat, and muscle tension. EFT can be used as a powerful tool during moments of high stress or anxiety, providing a sense of calm and grounding.

In addition to its immediate effects, EFT can also create long-term changes in how we perceive and respond to stress and anxiety. By addressing the emotional root causes, EFT helps to rewire the brain and establish new patterns of thinking and behavior. This can lead to a reduction in the frequency and intensity of stress and anxiety episodes, ultimately improving overall well-being.

How to Practice EFT for Stress and Anxiety Relief

Engaging in EFT for stress and anxiety relief is within reach for everyone, regardless of their prior experience or background. To help you commence your EFT practice, here’s a detailed guide below.  You can also read our condensed Quick Tips for EFT Tapping: Harnessing Emotional Well-Being.

Identify the Issue

Pinpoint the specific issue or emotional distress you wish to address, whether it’s a recent stressful event, recurring anxiety trigger, or a general feeling of unease.

Rate the Intensity

Gauge the intensity of the emotional distress on a scale from 0 to 10. This initial rating will serve as a baseline to monitor your progress during the EFT session.

Setup Statement

Craft a setup statement that recognizes the issue and reinforces self-acceptance. For instance, “Even though I feel stressed about [specific issue], I deeply and completely accept myself.”

Tap the Side of the Hand (Karate Chop Point)

Using firm but gentle pressure, tap on the side of your hand while repeating the setup statement three times.

Tap the Meridian Points

Progress through the various Meridian points on the face and body, tapping lightly with two or three fingers. See the chart below.

Repeat the Reminder Phrase

While tapping on each point, reiterate a reminder phrase that mirrors the issue at hand. For example, “This stress about [specific issue].”

Check-In

After several rounds of tapping, pause and reevaluate the intensity of your emotional distress. Take note of any changes in your emotional state.

Continue Tapping

Should the emotional distress persist, continue tapping on the acupressure points while repeating the reminder phrase. Repeat until the distress diminishes or resolves entirely.

Closure

Conclude the EFT session by taking deep breaths and expressing gratitude for the progress achieved. Reflect on any insights or shifts in perspective that may have emerged during the practice.

You can tap with two or three fingers, depending on what feels most comfortable for you. As you tap, focus on the specific issue or emotional distress you are addressing, and repeat the reminder phrase to keep it at the forefront of your mind.

Include EFT In Your Daily Routine

To experience the full benefits of EFT for stress and anxiety relief, it’s recommended to incorporate it into your daily routine. Here are some suggestions for integrating tapping into your day:

  1. Morning ritual: Start your day with a few minutes of EFT tapping to set a positive tone for the day ahead. Focus on any stress or anxiety you may be feeling and tap on the relevant acupressure points while affirming self-acceptance and gratitude.
  2. Mid-day recharge: Take a break during the day to practice EFT whenever you feel overwhelmed or stressed. It can be a quick session focusing on a specific issue or a general tapping routine to release tension and restore balance.
  3. Bedtime relaxation: Wind down before bed with a longer EFT session to release any residual stress or anxiety from the day. Use this time to reflect on your experiences and set intentions for a restful night’s sleep.

By making EFT a regular part of your routine, you can create a foundation of emotional well-being and resilience. Consistency is key in reaping the full benefits of this powerful technique.

Combining EFT with Other Stress Relief Practices

While EFT can be impactful on its own, combining it with other stress-relief practices can enhance its effectiveness. Here are some complementary techniques that you can incorporate into your self-care routine:

  1. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practicing mindfulness and meditation can help cultivate a deeper sense of calm and awareness. Combine EFT with mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing or body scanning, to amplify the relaxation response.
  2. Exercise and movement: Engaging in regular physical activity is a proven way to reduce stress and anxiety. Incorporate EFT before or after your workout to help release any emotional tension and enhance the mind-body connection.
  3. Journaling and self-reflection: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and emotional processing. Combine EFT with journaling exercises to explore the underlying causes of stress and anxiety and gain clarity on potential solutions.
  4. Holistic therapies: Consider integrating other holistic therapies, such as Aromatherapy, massage, Self-Hypnosis, or acupuncture, into your self-care routine. These practices can complement EFT by promoting relaxation and overall well-being.

Does EFT Work?  My Personal Experiences

I used EFT for anxiety about money and had very good results. For many years, my family had struggled financially due to health and employment issues, and we accumulated a lot of debt. I got to the stage where every time I thought about our bills, credit card debt, or mortgage, I would become overwhelmed with anxiety.  It was horrendous!

Then a couple of years ago I began looking into the Law Of Attraction and joined a program called Wealth Beyond Reason. As part of the program, you have to address your limiting beliefs and fears and eliminate them by trying a variety of tools on offer. This is when I first learned about Emotional Freedom Techniques from Dr. Carol Look. I tried it and it worked a treat. I don’t have any anxiety about money, bills, or debt anymore.

Not only that, but I have also had a horrible experience of being bullied by an employer.  Again, I would experience overwhelming anxiety just thinking about him.  It’s the most awful feeling, so I combined EFT, empowering affirmations, and meditation and did them multiple times per day, and the anxiety just disappeared.  It was wonderful, and miraculously the bullying stopped too.

More Personal Feedback

But the most dramatic results happened for my son Dallas.  It was due to my son’s long history of anxiety-related disorders and the lack of effective treatment available, that I set up this website and went in search of a solution.

I’m happy to say I discovered Emotional Freedom Techniques, which has been a life-saver. It has miraculously changed Dallas’s life.   The worst of his anxiety has gone.  And after 10 years plagued with mental health issues, he finally has a life free of debilitating anxiety and depression.  He has a full-time job which he loves, he’s out and about in the community and finally beginning to enjoy a normal life.  (So don’t give up!)

To reiterate: the way EFT works is, that as the person taps the specific points on their face and body, they recite personalized affirmations. Through repetition of the tapping and affirmations, the anxiety begins to subside. You simply keep doing it until it’s gone. The speed at which it will subside will depend on each individual, as our levels of anxiety about different issues vary from person to person. And the number of sessions you may have to do will differ too.

Conclusion: Empowering Yourself with EFT for Lasting Stress and Anxiety Relief

In conclusion, EFT Tapping emerges as an effective and easy-to-implement technique for stress and anxiety relief.  It offers a holistic approach to emotional well-being. The consistent and growing body of research supports its effectiveness as a powerful self-care tool. By combining the principles of acupressure with psychological insights, EFT Tapping provides a unique method for addressing stress and anxiety.

Its simplicity and versatility make it suitable for a variety of situations, empowering individuals to manage their emotional states independently.
